Just one week ahead of a Real Madrid vs Barcelona Clasico for La Liga, the Blaugrana extended their winning streak in the league after beating Eibar at home by 3-0. Luis Enrique gave rest to a few of his key players, since not only most of the squad was coming from a 2-week international break, but there are also two important fixtures coming up in the days ahead.
Barça dominated possession throughout the entire game, but Eibar ended up being the side getting closer to score first before the half-time break. The visitors caught Luis Enrique‘s men sleeping in a couple occasions during the first half and even missed an open net opportunity.
The goalless draw would only be unraveled in the 60th minute of the game, when Xavi and Lionel Messi managed to find a loophole in Eibar‘s defense, allowing the veteran Spanish midfielder to finish off with great class when going face to face with Irureta.
The 2-0 had a strong taste of Brazilian football in it. Daniel Alves took his time to send in a well targeted cross into Eibar‘s box and Neymar responded to it with a strong first-touch strike, leaving no chance at all for the visitors’ goalkeeper to stop it. With a 2-goal cushion, Barça could finally rest a bit and start thinking about the games against Ajax on Tuesday (UEFA Champions League fixture) and Real Madrid on Saturday.
However, there was a player on the pitch still starved for more and that player was Lionel Messi. The Argentinian is on the verge of breaking La Liga‘s all-time goalscoring record (currently still on the hands Zarra, with 251 goals) and this Saturday he got to score his 250th league goal, leaving him only 1 behind from tying the mark. Messi got to add his name to the scoresheet after a terrific play in which he got assisted by Neymar and then finished it off with a strong and precise shot to the far post. The scoreline didn’t suffer any further changes and Barça will now start focusing in their matches against Ajax and Real Madrid.
